SOS Summer Reading & Writing Camp

Come read and write with Blind Finn!
This summer, our students will be finding their writing inspiration from a blind dog named Finn. When Finn steps into a room, the first thing people notice is his wagging tail and the second, his probing nose as he sniffs the new surroundings, happy to explore and meet new people. Despite being one of a litter of nine, who spent his puppy days outside in the winter cold, Finn loves other dogs, cats, and people. He’s eager to lick a hand or feel around with his paws. And a scratch behind the ear is rewarded with his happy, tongue-lolling grin. Finn doesn’t need eyes to know who loves and cares for him, and through him, children and adults alike can better understand what it is to live with a disability. A few accommodations make Finn’s life easier. Instead of three open steps off his family’s back deck, there are now five wide steps Finn can climb and descend unassisted. To keep him safe inside, his family placed a baby gate in front of the basement stairs. Finn is now able to navigate his home and yard, find his food bowl, and do the things that other dogs do, including going to the bathroom outside without help. One of the first veterinarians who examined Finn and his siblings, questioned the quality of life for a blind dog. Yet, at two years old, Finn is thriving and is ready to show the world how special he really is.

SOS Summer Math Camp

Build Basic Skills, Build Confidence, and Make Math Fun!
Certified math teacher, Dana Shepherd is excited to work with students on their math skills this summer. In her experience, students that struggle in mathematics find it boring, pointless, and lack confidence in their basic skills. But at SOS Math Camp, math is fun because Dana teaches it in creative ways, including using art! She will individualize instruction for all participants and allow kids to work at their own pace while connecting math to their own lives. Dana cannot wait to share her passion and enthusiasm with your child!
